()’ve probably already read about how “Crazy Rich ns” is the studio release to feature an -n cast in 25 yes — since The accomplished that feat in 1993.

(Don’t , but “Crazy Rich ns” serves up whole s of ns at a , and none of them die, of them speak English and — wonder of wonders — every cher s and s etremely different, so won’t have an issue telling them apt.)

But as much of an event as this is for us, the truth is that anyone — n or not — should see the movie. It achieves what few s in recent memory have accomplished. It re us that the ultra-y genery don’t live up to the pitch that they, and the Rean Pty have collectively tried to sell us.
This nrative consistently presents the staggeringly rich as different from — and better than — the huddled masses.
They’re heroes, who use their to fight injustice — think Oliver on The CW’s row, the current (who uy brags that his superpower is “being rich”), ’s Tony Stk, and .
They’re “makers” who pull the rest of us “takers” up by our bootstraps, while creating , disrupting industries and changing the .
They’re captns of industry and ers of , bent on remaking this nation, whether we like it or not. If they feel like slicing into three pts, building a giant w on our southern border, ointing their own unqualified offspring to of power, well, it’s pt of a grand plan that, rest assu, end with Being Agn.

It seems hasn’t had this many tycoons at the pinnacle of our political sy — elected, ointed or manipulating from the shadows — since the Gilded of the late 1800s. And a shocking number of ns believe that this is uy a good thing for our country: If ’re y, must be a stable genius who’s ened and deserves it.
Conr “Crazy Rich ns” something of a second . Most of the rich folk in the movie e indeed “crazy,” if efine crazy as “petty, tawdry, ncissistic and devious.”
While the ’s and ing lady Chu (Constance , proving she’s a big- st); her fast-talking confidante Peik-Lin Goh (Awkwafina in a breakout turn); and matrichs Ah Ma and Eleanor ( Lu and Yeoh, both terrific) — do eude smts and competence, the members and hangers-on of their etended clans e mostly framed as feckless wastrels, mory bankrupt pasites or goofy buffoons.
With the eception of ing man Nick ng (played by the ing Henry Ging) and his -to-be-wed best friend, Colin Khoo (impressively hd-muscled ), it’s hd to any of these guys ening a massive without being fortunate enough to have inherited it — or, say, for political office and winning.

They make for hilious entertnment, but put in of ual power, could them quickly off the rls.
in today, of course, we don’t have to very hd.
We’ve already mand to blur the line between “reality” and real reality, with just enough voters buying into Donald ’s mogul facade to put the tele tycoon into office.
The catastrophic results have been more ridiculous than even ever could have d. But with millions of mginalized at risk, what began as black comedy has become a horror show.
That is an “Crazy Rich ns” is worth a . Yes, it’s an object lesson, but it’s also ect entertnment. And with the we have to do in the months a, we deserve a few hours of escapist respite before we get out into the trenches to resist, organize and vote this country back on track.
